Elisabete’s Path Back into Healthcare

After returning to London, Elisabete faced a period of uncertainty. A qualified Intensive Care Nurse, she was not working and relying on savings while navigating changes in her family life and caring for her child.

Although highly skilled, long hospital shifts were no longer suitable. Elisabete wanted to transition into a more flexible role within a GP practice but wasn’t sure how to take the next step.

Elisabete joined the Parental Employment Programme, where she received tailored, one-to-one support to help stabilise her situation and plan her future.

She explored her options and identified two clear pathways: moving into a GP setting with training, or progressing through a top-up nursing degree. Support focused on rebuilding her confidence, recognising her experience, and navigating education and funding systems.

Elisabete has since applied to university to continue her studies and is preparing to apply for Student Finance. She is also exploring opportunities within local GP practices that can support her transition into primary care.

“If I had been alone, I don’t know if I could have done so much… we got a lot done.”

Elisabete is now taking confident steps towards a sustainable career in healthcare—one that fits around her family life.
