Neusa, a mother of two, joined the Parental Employment Programme after being referred by a welfare advisor. Following a recent relocation and four years out of work, she was keen to rebuild her confidence, improve her English, and find a role that could fit around her caring responsibilities.
Balancing childcare for her young son, Neusa needed flexible, part-time work while also navigating the challenges of settling into a new area. At the same time, she faced barriers including limited English language skills, financial pressures, and feelings of isolation.
Through the Parental Employment Programme, Neusa received tailored, one-to-one support focused on both her wellbeing and employment goals. Initial support centred on rebuilding engagement, offering reassurance, and helping her feel less isolated as she adjusted to her new environment.
Recognising that improving her English was key to unlocking opportunities, Neusa was supported to access ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) provision and enrolled onto an online Functional Skills English course so she could begin learning straight away.
With growing confidence, Neusa began exploring employment opportunities aligned with her interests, particularly in cleaning roles within hotels or commercial settings. She was supported to identify local vacancies and guided through the application process.
Alongside employment support, practical advice was provided to help ease financial pressures, including signposting to cost of living support for essential household items. This holistic approach has helped stabilise her situation, allowing her to focus on her longer-term goals.
Neusa is now actively engaging with the programme and taking positive steps towards employment. With continued support, she is developing her skills, building confidence, and moving closer to securing a role that works for her and her family.
“Thank you for your support. I really need this help because I don’t know anyone here and feel isolated. That’s why I want to find a job—to get out of the house and feel better. Whatever opportunities are available, I’m ready to try. I’ll do whatever it takes to learn and find work.”
Her journey highlights how personalised support can empower parents to overcome barriers and progress towards sustainable, fulfilling employment.
